Why You Can’t Sleep?

Are you tossing and turning at night, unable to find the elusive land of dreams despite cutting back on caffeine and reducing screen time? Well, it might be time to point the finger at your mattress and bedding. Turns out, the key to a restful night might just be lying beneath you.

Dr. Sophie Bostock, a sleep expert from Bensons for Beds, reveals that the key considerations for sleep furniture are ensuring proper joint support to avoid muscle tension. If you wake up with aches and pains, your mattress could be the culprit. Consider trying out a different bed; if your discomfort improves, it might be time for an upgrade at home.

Rebecca Swain, director and mattress specialist at Winstons Beds, warns that a mattress that is too soft can misalign your spine, causing lower back pain, while a mattress that is too firm can put pressure on joints, leading to discomfort. Shared sleep also plays a role – a bed that’s too small or a mattress that transfers motion can disrupt your sleep.

Dr. Sophie advises, “If you’re sharing a bed, a larger mattress will reduce the chance of being disturbed by your bed partner.” When searching for the right mattress, testing it out in person is ideal, but online options with a trial period can save you from being stuck with an uncomfortable choice.

Consider the filling of the mattress, as this affects both support and comfort. Rebecca suggests looking for materials like wool, cotton, silk, and cashmere for breathability and support, along with fibers like organic flax for weight distribution and horsetail to aid spinal alignment.

Chris Tattersall, Sleep Expert and MD of Woolroom, suggests that your bedding could also be a factor. Synthetic bedding fibers like polyester can create a stuffy and humid sleep environment, disrupting your body’s ability to regulate temperature. It’s all about trial and error, and finding the right combination might make you feel a bit like Goldilocks in the Three Bears’ house.

Once you discover your perfect sleep setup, every bedtime will be a true fairytale. Say goodbye to sleepless nights and hello to sweet dreams on your customized mattress and bedding haven!
